BorDocs Documentary Forum creates a space to contemplate on the way realities are recorded through media. BorDocs, in its submissions, seeks to incorporate diverse ways of making and understanding non-fiction film making: its avant-garde formats, discourses, texts, images and audio are focused on describing everyday life. Founded in 2003, the Forum serves as a platform for young filmmakers, producers, academics, and nonfiction specialists to merge. BorDocs is an opportunity to experience outstanding documentary filmmaking and trendsetting.
The documentary genre has emerged as a multifaceted medium for storytelling. It approaches social injustice and addresses personal or insightful discourse through interactive or hybrid media. Over the past years, documentaries have enjoyed international popularity and have become the point of convergence between artistic and educational disciplines. BorDocs Documentary Forum brings a unique mix of documentaries to the Tijuana-San Diego border region and establishes a common space for thir creation and enjoyment.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES - Contribute to the growth of the documentary genre in our country by offering academic training to new filmmakers with fresh and modern views of their social context and who are open to the exploration of alternative national realities from their personal perspectives.
- Establish new and enriching links between documentary professionals and novel filmmakers which add to the views and understanding of work dynamics as well as to recent innovative projects related to the genre.
- Generate proposals for national and international documentary exhibitions, which bring in new public and trigger critical and active participation of the audience.
- Propel debate and the exchange of ideas arising from documentary filmmaking, addressing the viewer as a citizen and as a constituent element of public space; a genre intimately linked to the social sphere.
- Activate political debate among the audience. We believe documentaries are political because they invite society to observe its own members and their discontents.
- Promote the development of training and specialization programs, counting on the importance and growth the documentary genre is having artistically and commercially around the world.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Develop a series of courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and screenings intended to train new filmmakers and the public on documentary filmmaking.
- Present a series of documentaries which include the screenings of some of the most recognized local, national and international work.
- To promote the presence of internationally distinguished documentary filmmakers in Tijuana in order to impulse the creation of new filmmakers and the development of our documentary film audience.
BENEFITS
• Community- BorDocs represents relief amidst a surrealistic landscape, Hollywood style excesses, and the media banality ruling commercial television. The presence of a Documentary Festival in the city proves we can offer a different vision of our reality. Through cinema, communities gain strength because they become linked to a public space free of everyday norms, patterns, and censorship.
In a city in much need of civility, BorDocs invites critical thinking and shared thought through images and sound. Put in the words of Chilean documentary filmmaker, Patricio Guzman: a city without a documentary festival is like a family without a family photo album.
• Educational and cultural Institutions- In each of its editions, the documentary forum has created a space for the development of young filmmakers and artists. It offers methodological tools and workshops intended to trigger projects that activate auto representation, historical registration, and the application of academic research in documentary production. BorDocs with the support of educational and cultural institutions offers a solid and specialized program deriving from the participation of filmmakers, producers and specialists in the area. In this way, the forum supports and continues academic and cultural development of the region’s institutions.
• Private sector- BorDocs is an opportunity to finance a project which contributes to enhance social actions using new technologies and alternative mass media. It supports corporations with ecological, sustainable, social objectives or tendencies open to democratic processes. Following a perspective of mutual growth and advertisement exchange, companies can be integrated in the documentary series by sponsoring a section of the forum or we can link them to documentary production. |
